The Mask

So this past Saturday I got my act together and my sewing supplies and put together 4 masks with two others almost completed. That evening we were taking two of them to Fort Wayne to my son plus some other items. Tom and I decided to pick up some food for all of us. Surprising it was busy and the waiting time to pick up food was 40 minutes plus 15 more. I decided to give my mask a trial run and put it on while I waited inside for the food. It was interesting to see reactions of others who came in. We all did social distancing but only one other person came in with a mask. I got some uneasy looks like….is she sick…..should I be wearing a mask….wonder if I can get someone to make one for me or maybe they were just admiring my cat fabric. I also went to Lowes to pick up some rope for the other masks and only a couple people had masks on there too. To be clear though the CDC just asked for this on Friday, the day before.
I had to go and get blood drawn on Monday at the hospital but not near the emergency room. I wanted to make sure I had this mask on correctly before I went in. When you go into the hospital someone asks you if you feel well, have been around anyone who doesn’t feel well and what are you there for. So I got checked in and was waiting, trying not to touch anything not mine, playing Wordscapes on my phone. They call me back and get the blood drawn, leave, use the restroom, wash my hands, look in the mirror and realize I have my sunglasses on. They are prescription and not super dark and I didn’t pay any attention. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to touch my face. I probably looked like an eccentric lady with her cat mask on and sunglasses.
This mask has three layers of fabric and then a pocket for a replaceable filter. It is comfortable and covers the face nicely and easily adjustable. You’re glasses get steamed up until you get it to the spot where they don’t. You also have to speak louder and clearer when you have the mask on.
This is the front and the back of the other two in progress. You can see the filter pocket.
Showing the replaceable filters that I am using. Small coffee filters with the bottom corner cut off. We had purchased the wrong size and instead of tossing them I thought they would be perfect. This mask also has a bendable wire sewn in to form to your nose.
Here is the pattern if you are interested.
Today is a beautiful day, April 8, 2020. My cheerful porch pic features a fan quilt top and my Teal and Blue painting. If you are interested in purchasing my art go to my online store and place an order. It would be an addition that would brighten your home.
There is a lot of purple and green going on in the garden today. I always love these grape hyacinths and are joyful when they start showing up. This may be the full second year and they have multiplied.
The large purple hyacinths are still growing. They will be so pretty.
The windflowers have had more blooms since last week.
The magnolia tree is slowly blooming and the forsythia that is so bright yellow looks great behind it.
Such a pretty flower.
Pretty purple, greens and yellows just like the garden.

Hope you are staying busy and everyone is getting along.
After I have watched so much of the daily news I have to watch something fluffy and lovey so I have downloaded the Hallmark App. It is calming. Even when they are mad they really aren’t so mad. I have really got to put some light polish or clear on my nails, they are so fragile. Working on my website and adding originals to my store. Planning meals, last night was meat loaf, night before was sloppy joes and Monday was tater tot casserole. Tonight possibly potato soup, homemade bread and a salad. Comfort food, I am staying away from making cookies and such. They are too easy to over eat.

Hanging in there-how bout you?

I have a hard time concentrating and find myself wanting to watch information on the television all the time. I try not to turn the tv on in the morning because I don’t get the things done that I need to. The projections are daunting and I pray that they don’t come true. My heart breaks, I know the hospital workers are so worn down and I wish that we all could help them. But the way we do it is not to get this damn invisible thing. Stay home, social distance, wash your hands.

Last night we were sitting on the porch and I could hear a neighbor family playing and the birds chirping. We watched a robin hop around in our front garden and amazingly listen for a worm, peck into the ground and come up with one. It was the first really nice night to sit out and it was like there was nothing horrible going on out in the world. A nice respite.

I am showing you my tiny daffodil spring bloom. They are so sweet.

I worry so much about my immediate family, all three have to leave the home every day because they are deemed essential. Mixed feelings, glad they have their jobs but afraid. I had to go out yesterday to the grocery and pharmacy. I took a towel and large clothes pins rt. I wrapped the towel around the handle clipped it and put the rest in the seat and put my purse on it, and it worked well. I had to buy a lot of groceries….what if we have to quarantine and not be able to go out, plus I really don’t want to go out anymore than I need so I bought enough that should hold us for at least three weeks steadily.
The people behind me, standing behind the designated line had a cart full too. Thank you for the grocery workers, the shelves were pretty well stocked. There was some toilet paper and especially milk this time too, our favorite 1 percent. Last time there was only 2 percent and although it is good stuff I don’t like to get used to that creaminess.
The grocery store had a fair amount of people in it, but not too many to handle. What I think is interesting, people don’t like to make eye contact. It’s like if you do then you might “get it”. I have a hard time with this because I smile at everyone. It doesn’t mean that you have open your mouth. It’s a camaraderie, but I also feel that people are just worried and are hurrying through to get this job done.

I also got gas, with my Kroger points I paid $1.10 per gallon, the world is certainly upside down. I have my Bath and Body works skin sanitizer that smells so good and used that often, along with the sanitizer out at the grocery store. I have a sore spilt on my finger due to dry hands from washing and the sanitizer.

These flowers I am showing are called windflowers or I understand they are a form of anemones. I planted them last year and don’t remember the white one. They will be really beautiful when they spread but are delightful now.
Now, to wear a mask or not wear a mask. I am not going out again until I get my masks made. I have to go get some blood drawn for a medication that I take and the best place I get it done is at the hospital and then I have to go back for the doctors appointment later this month. I am getting my sewing machine out today and whipping some up. There are some with pockets for extra filters to be inserted and I believe that’s the one I will make. I thought that coffee filters might be a useful thing for the disposable filter. We had bought the wrong size, too small and I thought that cutting a corner off would make it fit well in the pocket. It has a double layer but isn’t bulky.

This picture is from this week, one of my cheery porch pics that features my art and a quilt I have. Since social distancing this is my way to reach out to walkers and drivers that come by and also use my art since all my shows have been cancelled so far. If you seen anything that you like you can purchase it from my online store.

This mornings sunrise….Friday April 3rd, 2020. I just loved the reflection on the pond. This captured the best of both, sunrise and reflection.

So I am going to make potato soup, breads, maybe some cookies. Sloppy joes, Mexican casserole off the top of my head. I am pretty well stocked and I am thankful. I asked the check out gal if she sees lots of snacks being purchased as they go down her conveyer belt and she said yes. I feel you can’t go on vacation without snacks, and you can’t go through a pandemic without snacks.

My prediction, when life gets back to a new normal we all may be a few pounds heavier and there will be many new babies after the boom named Andrew in the New York area. I do enjoy watching his steady, calm, empathetic and forthright news conferences. I also don’t think I will be so choosy about toilet paper and tissues anymore.

Take advantage of the programs that have been offered, stay safe, practice all the guidelines and I am sorry if you have been closely affected by Covid 19 and have a loved one sick or worse. We are all in this together.

staying busy

Staying at home is not a whole lot different from my regular work day so I am not feeling it like many of you who leave home for work and interact with many children and adults. I do miss going to visit my son who lives across town and we would go out to eat, etc. For now we use messenger face to face and it will do, it’s good to see his face.
I was going to Physical therapy but have graduated and now I just plan a quick trip to the grocery store.
Tom’s job has been deemed essential, so he goes to work every day and also both our sons work for the same company and it has been deemed essential. I worry about them getting the Corona Virus but they are working and having a paycheck and then they would be worrying if they didn’t have that.

I ask every day, do you feel well, are you washing your hands, not touching anyone, yada yada. Probably rolling their eyes as I say it, but I am allowed.

I take walks around the house and around the neighborhood.
These crocus always cheer me, especially the purple ones.
We really could use a little more sun.
When I go outside there is always someone at the window watching me. The six of them are used to having me home and when I take a short trip, it is like I have been gone for months, rubbing, circling and talking, it is like having six dogs.
We have gotten take out a few times and also cooking a lot at home. Chili and Bar Cookies for this night. As I have gotten older those beans give acid reflux, how irritating. Has anyone else noticed this?
My bird feeders were beat up over the winter and also had holes and I lost much feed. When ever you buy a new feeder it takes a while for the birds to find it, it has been about two weeks now. On the old feeders I saw birds looking over the moldy feed that was stuck and I thought they would flock here saying thank you, thank you! Not so……must be practicing social distancing.
This last Saturday was National Quilt Day and so I though I would put a quilt on the porch. This is a crazy quilt made by someone way back in my husbands family. It is over a hundred years old and I use it for a tree skirt at Christmas. It is two sided and the other side has 2.5 inch blocks. Since my art is so colorful I decided that a painting on the door would be really pretty. I have decided to do it everyday and change quilts and paintings. Since my art shows are cancelled until who knows when this is a nice way to show my paintings making it look cheerful since we have to distance ourselves. This painting is titled “Bobs Hideout”.
The next day the other side of the quilt and my poppy painting “Live Out Loud”, shows well on the black door.
A quilt top of my own that I need to finish. The painting is “Oh Happy Day”. I have had fun doing this and hope that my neighbors see and enjoy it. I plan to keep it up for awhile until I don’t.
This girl is a stinker. She will bite one of the other cats if she wants to lay where they are sleeping. One of the other cats started to tap the catnip box so I put some on a plate. Look where this girl is laying….in the middle of the plate. Her face is ornery just like her.
As I had mentioned earlier many art shows have been cancelled and all of us don’t know when the virus will go down. I am going to be putting originals on my shop. I didn’t do this before because I would have been taking them with me. This new painting “Big and Beautiful” is for sale. It is 36 X 36 and if you are interested email me. Look closely there is a cat peeking at you.
My paint the sides also so that there is no need for a frame. It will come with a hanging wire and a nice write up about me and the painting.
I really like this side, it is pretty.
This is another new mixed media painting “Among Friends”. It looks really bright and pretty on my wall and would do the same for yours. There are so many interesting elements in this painting and it is enjoyable to look at.
Like all my paintings I have painted the sides and really enjoy this one.
I am very partial to these poppies, love this French Bulldog and the three birds are a redheaded woodpecker, prinia and a cardinal at the top. I will be putting this one on my shop also. It is 22 X 28. For both you can also purchase prints and note cards.

Summer is my time to do the art show circuit to earn a living so if you are so inclined to have a colorful and happy painting or print or a pack of note cards I would be so glad to send them to you. I do all the printing, packaging and mailing. Click here to go to my shop.

Stay well and safe and may everyone get along. sometimes that’s tough.
