New: Art, Art Ventures and Art Shows

This sweet painting is “Lovely Lily’s Flower Crown” after our bullseye tabby Lily. I used Shiva Oil Sticks because they blend so nicely. She really does have that stare, especially when it is 9 p.m. and it is time for treats. It is on an 8 X 8 canvas.
“Jubilant Sisterhood” an artists job is to observe and I see many people especially during art fairs. I had this painting brewing in my mind and finally got it on canvas. The background has so much movement and is a fun atmosphere, with a checkerboard representing a dance floor. My goal was to show many different women and nationalities. dancing. I first drew outlines from a pictures, then traced it and traced it again onto wallpaper cut them out and adhered it to the painted canvas. I have a pregnant woman, a woman vigorously dancing, a Hispanic girl in a tutu, Asian woman in high heels, a Native American girl, a tall black woman jubilantly dancing, a Middle Eastern woman and an elderly woman and it is on an 18 X 36 canvas. No matter who we are, as women we have families, jobs, problems, happiness and are a sisterhood. I will have these listed in my store if you are interested in prints or if you would like to purchase the Originals come and visit me at the local art shows I will be at. Look at my list on the home page.

A new art venture I have added is having a rented area at the newly renovated old church in Columbia City. It is called The Shops at the Sanctuary and they also have a Facebook page The Shops at the Sanctuary. I will be putting art and also stitchery items in it. I am excited about this and now to get “makin stuff”. The Grand Opening is August 6th.

This last weekend was Art in the Park in Downtown Fort Wayne. I have never done this show with cooler weather before but it was fantastic. I was worried that it was going to rain a lot on Sunday but it held off thankfully, through teardown. My son, Kevin helps me put up the tent and tear it down, but the rest of the shows I am on my own. So I don’t take pictures. I would have liked to take some pictures of peoples t-shirts because there was such an array of sayings and it would have been great to do a collage. This was just my second show of the season and customers were generous and I met many new art lovers.

July is a busy month here at the Hawkins House, along with the art shows, we are helping our sons move and get established in a new to them home. Tom and I are going on a weeks vacation to Frankfort Michigan right on the lake and I have another show right after that at Covington in Fort Wayne. We are so looking forward to a little R and R time.

With the rain and humidity my garden is growing crazy, some things that are spent do need to be trimmed up and that will wait till that humidity floats away. The tree swallows babies have flown the nest and I think there is a new bunch of eggs, someone is sitting on it constantly. I hope that they hatch and we will have Mom and Dad and maybe Uncle or Aunt flying in and out and feeding them. We have a screen that we put down but not during this time, they become very agitated and we hate to rock the boat. I will keep you updated when we see their littles heads.

Take care till next time.

Excitement Galore!

I have opened up registration for my new Mixed Media Workshops. The first will be on Sunday October 21 1 pm to 5 pm, and the next is Friday October 26 6 pm to 10 pm. They will be 4 hours and together we will build a painting with different mediums starting with acrylic paint and then we will be using gel medium, wall paper, acrylic ink, oil paintsticks and the list goes on. It’s a laid back, low key, no pressure workshop. Don’t hesitate because you think you have no artistic talent, because none is needed. I will be hands on step by step guiding and the participants will come away with a 5 X 7 or 6 X 6 gallery wrapped completed canvas painting. Each workshop is limited to eleven artists. It would be a good time for friends to get together and do something different or if you just want to get away and come by yourself you will have a good time. I hope to have up to four workshops per month. I already have my first registrant, and I am very excited to meet new people and pass on the fun of mixed media. It is a very forgiving way to paint. We use household items to make texture and marks, like brushes, lids, bubble wrap along with your fingers.

This is a gem of a building, the Pennsy Depot with has been newly restored and was just put on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. I have it reserved for our workshops and it is right beside the Decatur Police and fire departments. The address is 111 N. 7th Street, Decatur. The city also has many good restaurants to dine at before or after your workshop. When the time gets closer I will have all that information listed on my website. To register click on over to my website and at the top click on workshop or go into the Here’s My hART shop.  Both dates are listed in the dropdown.

This weekend I will be going to a new art fair that I haven’t participated in before. Looking forward to it, and I don’t think it is going to be blazing hot like my last few.

Dogwood Park sounds like a delightful area to have a show at, and it may have a lot of trees. I don’t have my booth assignment yet but will post it on Facebook when I do.

This last weekend we had a family pool party at our house. It was nice to have everyone together and missed the few that were not able to make it. We had a pretty good turnout and some of the out of towners were able to make it. We grabbed the opportunity to have a family picture because it had been at least 5 years or more.

My last art show was a hometown show, so I didn’t have to travel. It was Art in the Park in Freiman Square in Fort Wayne. It was hot, I was under a large shade tree with good foot traffic. I also had my fans with me so I did not melt too bad. They asked if I was happy with my spot, so I should get it next year too.

These two are sisters and spent a lot of time in my booth, they were a delight. Donna and Michele, thank you for your time and I hope to see you again.

Talbot Street Art Fair

So excited to be called off the waitlist for the Talbot Street Art Fair. I have looked forward to doing this show for awhile, and to see what it is all about. Save the dates: June 16th 10:00 to 6:00 and June 17th 10:00 to 5:00. Hope to see you there.

On the road again

Last weekend I was in Holland Michigan, next weekend I will be going south to the Wyoming Ohio Art Show, this will be my second visit to this show. Wyoming is a suburb of Cincinnati and is a really pretty town that takes their arts seriously. I will be staying with my booth helper Margaret who always makes it an enjoyable visit. As an added bonus we are going to attend the play, His Eye is on the Sparrow on Saturday. I saw this play here in Fort Wayne and it left an impression as one of my favorites, so I jumped at the chance to see it again. Click here for information about the play. It is going to be a fun weekend, and if you are in the area please come to the Wyoming Art Show and find me, I am in booth 52.

It’s Been a Great Day

I buy only Bath and Body works hand soap because I find it doesn’t dry my hands out and the scents I just love. I usually buy 8 to 10 at a time so I don’t have to run to the store often. I just opened this one and I highly recommend it, Sweet Mint Mimosa. It makes hand washing a pleasure, not just something you have to do.

The day wasn’t too hot or too humid and the skys tonight are just gorgeous!

The sunset through the tree, pretty! It was even brighter than this.

I have two pretty burgundy hollyhocks that grace the back of my garage. I love how dark they are.

I never get tired of the daylilies. Each year they keep putting on a better show. These are Betsy Ross’s.

I have a show coming up this weekend in Fort Wayne, at Freiman Square. I have this new piece finished to add to my booth. I was thinking one day how many cats we have loved and lost because that’s the way it is. I put in all different patterns to represent them. They all held a special place in my heart.

This pool brings such pleasure for me. I had to take a picture because it was so blue and nice. We swam in it and just enjoyed the day off. I hope you had a great 4th of July too. God Bless America, Land That I Love!

Broad Ripple Art Fair this weekend!

Imagine yourself sitting at the bottom of a hill and you look up to see a beautiful evening sky with a hint of pink, surrounded by a sea of color. This is my newest painting, “Under the Blue Sky”. It will be for sale along with many others at the Broad Ripple art fair in Indianapolis.

When I started this painting I knew I wanted snapdragons with a lot of texture. The sky, then the snapdragons then I wasn’t sure which way I was going. Intuitive painting is putting down paint on a canvas and then eventually it will turn into something to work with. You stand back and start seeing different elements, shapes, colors. Check out the Indianapolis Art Center site and come visit us at booth 117.

Work in Progress

DSC_0013

Here I started a new painting on a 36 X 36 gallery stretched canvas. It is mixed media and I wanted to make the backgrounds interesting and block it off to give it space. I used pretty much some neutral tones. Blues in various tones were definites that I wanted to use. Right now this looks like a patchwork quilt but it won’t end up that way. It is all in the building process.

Here is my work in progress. I had to stop for the day and pick it up tomorrow. On the 20th of August I will be heading to Greenwood Indiana for the Wammfest to participate in their art fair. The information is on my homepage on the right side. This will be a good addition to my gallery. I haven’t done a show since Kalamazoo in August and I am looking forward to it. Thanks for stopping!
